The Trust for Public Land

Celebrating 40 years of conserving land for people

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) conserves land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, and other natural places, ensuring livable communities for generations to come.

TPL was founded in 1972 with goals of protecting land in and around cities and pioneering new land conservation techniques. Over the years, our work expanded to include projects from inner city to wilderness, and our broad experience has made us a national leader and innovator in city park creation, state and local conservation funding, and using Geographic Information Systems for conservation planning.

Who We Serve:

The great diversity of our work is best captured in three broad initiatives that together constitute our land-for-people mission.

Land and Water
Conserving wilderness, including places that safeguard clean drinking water and preserve the natural beauty of our coasts and waterways.

Parks for People
Working in cities and suburbs across America to ensure that everyone—in particular, every child—enjoys close-to-home access to a park, playground, or natural area.

Working Lands
Protecting the farms, ranches, forests, and other working lands that foster a healthy, vibrant agricultural system, and support land-based livelihoods.
