San Francisco

San Francisco, the light-hearted cosmopolitan, reclines against Twin Peaks and stretches toward the Marin Headlands. From the observation deck high above town, the city can be contemplated like an old map. A regatta in the far, seems still; downtown hills, flat; and the great park, a mere busy bundle of Autumn. The distance between an outstretched hand and landmarks such as the Ferry Building, Golden Gate Bridge, and even Alcatraz collapse in the crisp air.

You finger the shutter button of a compact, but desist. A camera does not record the smell of pine and brine, a foghorn salutation, thunderclaps drumming offshore, goose bumps on an exposed arm, the pleasure of clam chowder cracker dissolving on the tongue. Appreciation cannot be rushed, capture, or saved; only cultivated, sustained or lost. You wish you could take the city along with you as you leave, fold it in a pocket, store it in a glove compartment or hang it on a wall.
